On October 9th and 10th I attended the first ever Magic Leap Developer’s Conference ( http://magicleap.com ). MagicLeap is a company developing Enhanced Reality glasses and developing a Spatial Computing Operating System. This is a mind-blowing technology which detects the environment you are in and injects persistent 3D objects (holograms) into you environment which will interact with your environment (ie. walls, floor, furniture, and your hands).
MagicLeap has had significant investment by Google and AT&T.
This is imagined for many uses, but one big one is Sentient AI beings. This is not unlike the Star Trek Holodeck, but is more similar in concept to the holographic doctor in “Star Trek: Voyager”. Although I did not see a demo of the sentient interaction with a human appearing hologram called “Mica”, in which the glasses track your pupil movement and detect when you make eye contact with Mica who reacts. The person I talked to who saw this demo said it was very impressive, as this is essential to a believable simulation of human interaction.
One of the big parts of this experience is a spacial internet browser called Helios which supports 3D websites. At this time limited 3D objects are supported, but I believe a new fully 3D definition will evolve using a 3D Javascript that is reported to be available 1st Quarter 2019.
